Pink Nails For Leelah

Today is a special post, one that I hope bring awareness to a serious subject. Last night I happily congratulated a friend on officially being able to marry her wife. Yet today I, while proud, am saddened to participate in a movement that was brought about by the death of a precious girl. Pink Nails for Leelah was created to show pride and support to the Transgender and Transexual community.  Leelah Alcorn was a 17 year old girl who committed suicide because she wasn’t able to receive the love and respect she deserved from the people that mattered most to her.

Pink Nails for Leelah-001 Pink Nails for Leelah Pink Nails for Leelah-002So to honor Leelah, I created this black and pink foil mani.

“The only way I will rest in peace is if one day transgender people aren’t treated the way I was, they’re treated like humans, with valid feelings and human rights. Gender needs to be taught about in schools, the earlier the better. My death needs to mean something. My death needs to be counted in the number of transgender people who commit suicide this year. … Fix society. Please.” -Leelah Alcorn

To anyone who feels the same as Leelah, just remember..

What a beautiful thing to do. Anything that stands against hate is worth doing, no matter how small.

I’ve read about this movement, and while I didn’t have the time to participate I think it’s great there are also plenty of people that DO support girls like Leelah. I can’t believe how ignorant some people still are.

Very beautiful manicure. If I could have a wish come true in 2015, it would be that there will be no more such tragedy in life like Leelah’s 🙁

It makes me so happy that you did this <3 great mani for a great girl. It breaks my heart that it the way it did but hopefully her death won't be in vain. Thanks for doing this!

Beautiful. I have so many thoughts about this whole thing but I’ll try to be brief and just say that I think it’s insane how intolerant and ignorant people still can be. Leelah’s death feels like, amongst other things, an act of defiance. It could have been a life of making a difference.
